Project update 4 June 2024
Currently, we are awaiting funding to complete appropriate Traffic & Economic modelling. This is in response to the Pacific Highway upgrades and planning reforms to accommodate the predicted growth and to test the projects identified in the development of the Wyong District Place Plan.
Project background
Council is developing a ‘District Place Plan’ (the Plan) for Wyong and Tuggerah town centres and surrounding suburbs. The end result will be a graphic and easy to read document that can be picked up by anyone wanting to get a glimpse of community aspirations and strategic planning priorities in the area.
Over the past decade, many community members have shared ideas and provided feedback to help guide Council's and State Government's planning and infrastructure delivery. At the same time, strategies, plans and policy have been developed and much change has occurred, with natural disasters, economic shifts, rise of technology and COVID-19 changing the way we live and work.
Now is the time to reflect on our shared future and review the strategies already in place to check that they're still relevant and reflect community values. The Plan will ensure that the local community benefits as the area continues to transform and grow. It will guide Council’s decision-making and identify how Council, key stakeholders and members of the community can work together to make Wyong even better in the future.

What is a District Place Plan?
A ‘District Place Plan’ is a 10-year roadmap that will guide Council’s decision-making for Wyong and Tuggerah town centres and surrounding areas. It will advocate planning priorities and coordinate different teams across Council including those responsible for land use planning, placemaking, events and activities, infrastructure delivery, general projects and works.
The Plan will be the first of its kind for the Central Coast Council area, a comprehensive community led approach to decision making and planning. It will identify how Council, key stakeholders and members of the community can work together to make Wyong even better into the future.
Why is Council starting with Wyong?
Located at the heart of the Central Coast, Wyong and Tuggerah are strategically located as a gateway to our region, providing access to urban, rural and coastal communities, as well as convenient road and rail connections to Sydney, Newcastle and beyond. The area also performs a significant social, cultural, sporting, recreation and community service for the region. A range of housing opportunities are offered, surrounded by an attractive environment and sensitive ecosystems. Such attributes include the Wyong River and floodplain, wetlands, creeks and vegetated hills.
What are the boundaries of the Wyong District Place Plan?
A map of the Wyong District Place Plan boundaries is shown below in Figure 1, and includes the suburbs of:
- Wyong
- Tuggerah
- Watanobbi
- Mardi
- Chittaway Point
- Tacoma South
- Tacoma
- Rocky Point
- Tuggerawong
The area covered by the Wyong District Place Plan is a district group of suburbs that share natural, economic, built environment and social similarities. Grouping enables a cohesive and efficient planning approach to Council’s future decision-making.
How can the community influence the Plan?
The community will play in important role to guide the Wyong District Place Plan through the development of a shared vision, planning priorities and actions. Community feedback will be supported by rigorous background research and expert review to ensure that the Plan's actions are applicable, relevant and realistic.
How can the Plan help us prepare for future emergencies?
Research has shown that connected communities are resilient communities – the sharing of knowledge and resources makes everyone more prepared for the unknown. During tough times our community has repeatedly shown their strength by pulling together and looking out for one another., We want to ensure our community is even stronger before an emergency, so we’re thriving and prepared for whatever comes our way. Informed by the community, the Plan will identify priorities for planning and infrastructure to be more resilient and adaptive to future shocks and stresses.
How much will this plan cost?
The Wyong District Place Plan will identify priorities and actions to be facilitated, delivered or advocated on behalf of community by Council.
At this stage, there is no set budget for implementing these actions, and many of them will be delivered in partnership with other Council projects. As always, when assessing how to implement the actions, Council will aim to do it in the most efficient way possible, to deliver value for the community.
